Lydia and self-esteem, January 23, 2008

"What a delightful and benevolent story! The combination of humorous rhymes and charming illustrations had me smiling from beginning to end. The theme of this story, at least as I see it, is the power of optimism. The message is that an affirmative response to life can help lift us to the height where dreams are beckoning. Reading this book is a happy experience and I recommend it to everyone who wants to help young children build self-esteem."

What would Lydia the Ladybug say?, December 15, 2007

"This is a story you will read to your children or grandchildren again and again because the timeless message it conveys applies to every stage of development. Due to the subtle rhyming pattern, before you know it the little ones will be attempting to finish the sentences as you are reading to them.

When it becomes time to read it themselves, they will remember Lydia is not an ordinary lady bug and she will have taken on a life of her own in your child's imagination.

As a teacher, it is my experience that one of the hardest things for kids to live with is their differences--in size, looks, family, skills, talents--and one of their most urgent needs is to fit in with their peers. Lydia teaches them that the feeling of belonging comes from inside and from a choice to give and share of ourselves.

Together with the friends she makes on her journey, Lydia drives home the values of courage, determination, kindness, vision, hope, generosity, can-do mindset, friendship and joyful celebration of life.

There is also a subtle message of reverence for nature and our planet, and the importance of taking care of each other as well as of our natural environment if we want to find fulfillment and peace of mind.

Lydia's story is an illustration of one of Antoine de St-Exupéry's (author of Le Petit Prince, a French children's classic that is just as much for adults) most famous quotes: "On ne voit bien qu'avec le coeur. L'essential est invisible pour les yeux." Translation: "One can only see well with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes."

An echanting story with an uplifting message, November 29, 2007

"Lydia, a precious little Ladybug, is the center of a charming story that captured my imagination and took me back to memories of the joy of childhood books. It is the story of a seeming underdog, who, through spunk and determination (and the help of a wise spider), lifts up both herself and others. I was amused, entertained and touched by the story and the poetry of its words. "
